Southern right whale pays visit to Sapphire Coast
Devon Crowe and ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge are currently tracking its progress.
A CLOSE eye is being kept on a visiting Southern right whale who is exploring Toti’s coastline.
The whale, estimated to be between 8m and 10m in length, was first spotted on Tuesday, 28 June. On Wednesday morning it was seen close to Warner Beach, sparking concern that it was in danger.
Devon Crowe and ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge are currently tracking its progress.
“It’s moving north at about five kilometres per hour. From Warner Beach, it made its way past Doonside and at about 10.30am, it was by Chain Rocks,” said Cllr Beetge. “It is between the shark nets and the shore, about 50m offshore.
Once it passes Toti main beach, it should be fine. It doesn’t appear to be in any distress. We have seen markings on its back and near its blowhole, which could possibly be injuries, but that’s pure speculation from the distance we are monitoring it.”
