Decorated detective retires after 36 years

Khulekani received the detective of the year award four times during his illustrious crime-fighting career.

DETECTIVE Warrant Officer Khulekani Zungu (60) bade his SAPS colleagues farewell when he retired on Friday, 22 July.

W/O Zungu served 36 years in the police service, all of them based at Toti police station.

He was born in Toti and completed his schooling at KwaMakhutha High School. He did his police training at the South African Police Training College in Hammanskraal and graduated in 1981.

He was elevated to detective in 1991.

“In my retirement I will farm in the Zululand area with my family,” said Khulekani. His family includes his wife of 21 years, Immaculate and children Pinkie, Phindela and Nsiko.

“I was assigned to housebreakings during the latter part of my police career and over the years, I solved a lot of housebreakings and robbery cases and received good convictions for many of them.”

Khulekani received the detective of the year award four times during his illustrious crime-fighting career.

“I will miss my friends the most when I retire,” he said. “I made a lot of good friends on the force over the years. I will also miss my colleagues, but I think I have earned a rest after 36 years and I will enjoy my retirement.”
