Workshop focuses on Isipingo CBD turn-around

A THREE-day workshop aided by the South Durban Basin (SDB) Area Based Management (ABM) office gave Isipingo residents a chance to educate themselves on tacking local problems.

Along with Connective Cities and the German Development Organisation, the SDB ABM hosted the workshop from 16 to 18 November at the Aquatic Centre in Amanzimtoti.

Day one saw participants learn about the Urban Nexus Approach, a strategy used internationally. Day two included a tour of the Isipingo CBD and day three saw presentations conducted by participants, explaining how the challenges they saw in the area could be resolved.

“The training is premised on the thinking that rapid urbanisation requires an integrated perspective on urban planning and management, which is able to foster urgent synergies needed between sectors to ensure sustainable urban development. Isipingo has been a longstanding challenge in the SDB. Issues include illegal traders, littering and congestion, to name a few. The purpose of this training is to find innovative and sustainable strategies to turn the CBD around,” said Eurakha Singh SDB area manager.
