Pen pals meet after 60 years of long distance friendship

Marjorie and her Idaho Falls pal share some amazing similarities in life.

A Warner Beach resident had the fortune to meet up with her American pen pal after more than 60 years of long distance friendship.

Marjorie Kelly was blessed with a four-day visit from Georgia Brunt Davis, who she has been pen pals with since they were 12-years-old.

“It was so exciting to finally meet her,” said Marjorie. “We spent a wonderful few days together, before her and her husband returned home.”

The pair first exchanged correspondence as part of a project while Marjorie attended a primary school in Durban.

“I don’t know how we were selected to be pen pals,” she said. “We have almost always kept in contact over the years.”

Marjorie and her Idaho Falls pal share some amazing similarities in life. They were born and married in the same year. They had children in the same year – 1970 and 1973, although Georgia had two more children in between.

They were divorced in the same year and both remarried men named Tom.

“We lost touch twice over the years. The first time was when we both had small children and when we were going through our divorces.”

The pair made contact a few months ago after Georgia contacted Marjorie’s brother in Cape Town via social media.

As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Georgia and her husband were on a mission to Harare and when the opportunity arose to visit Marjorie in South Africa, she grabbed the chance.

“We spent four days catching up,” said Marjorie. “It was like we are sisters. We have a deep respect for one another. It was absolutely wonderful and I’m grateful to God we could finally meet in the flesh.

We will definitely keep in contact.”
