Driver entrapped after car aquaplanes on N2

Five taxi passengers hurt as car veered across the centre median, rolled and struck the southbound taxi

The wet weather on Wednesday afternoon, 22 February saw a car lose control on the N2 just before the Umgababa off-ramp.

Speculative reports from the scene indicate that a VW Polo was traveling towards Durban when he hit a big puddle of water, veered across the centre median, rolled and struck a taxi traveling along the southbound lane.

Netcare 911 paramedics and the fire department found the car had come to rest on its roof, with the driver still entrapped in the wreckage. The taxi pulled off the road about 300m from the point of impact.

After the injured were triaged, it was established that the driver of the VW sustained life-threatening injuries while five people from the taxi sustained minor injuries. The critically injured man was treated and after being placed on a ventilator by the provincial paramedic, was transported to hospital for further care.

The injured taxi commuters were treated and transported to various hospitals.
