[EXCLUSIVE TO PRINT] Young SA adventurer walks tall through Toti
Zakie Odendaal is fulfilling her dream of walking some 3,000 kilometres along the wild South African coastline
JOURNEYING solo through desert, semi-arid karoo and subtropical areas, Zakie Odendaal (23) covers the southern African coastline on foot alone.
The Mpumalanga-born woman is fulfilling her dream of walking some 3,000 kilometres along the wild South African coastline.

Setting off on her 10-month expedition, Zakie started at the Namibian border last September and aims to cover the stretch of coastline up until Mozambique. Seven months into her journey, the adventurer found herself stopping at an Amanzimtoti bed and breakfast for some comfort and restoration before heading on.

Zakie grew up in the small town of Lydenburg, Mpumalanga. The traveler worked abroad for three years after completing school, pursuing a job in photography. After experiencing the finest of First World countries, she realised South Africans have a kind and loving ‘liveliness’ to them that some of the European lands’ inhabitants lack. On this realisation, she returned to her home country intent to explore more of its often unnoticed beauty.
