Big bang fireworks grate Toti SPCA

Despite the awareness raised about the cruelty inflicted on animals when setting off big bang fireworks, some members of the community continued to prioritise their needs over the lives of animals.

THE big bangs last week while Diwali was celebrated took their toll on Amanzimtoti SPCA, which was inundated with fear-ridden pets.

Despite the awareness raised about the cruelty inflicted on animals when setting off big bang fireworks, some members of the community continued to prioritise their needs over the lives of animals.

“This year’s fireworks were the same as every year’s,” said Toti SPCA manager, Tracey Girling. “A lot of animals went missing from their homes, and some sadly haven’t been found. The fireworks were frighteningly loud across from the shelter in Isipingo, to a point where we had to give our dogs Calmeze.”

While the flowery showers of light lit up the sky above Athlone Park, it was the use of thunder-flash style bombs that sent animals cowering in fear.

Tracey explained that one of the SPCA’s dogs, which was due to set off for her new home within days, injured herself in the kennel out of fright. “Fortunately, she wasn’t injured too severely and after a visit to the vet, went to her new home,” said Tracey.

While the Fireworks Action Campaign Toti (FACT) and the Metro Police acknowledged the rights to use fireworks which is associated with the celebration of light, the same respect isn’t always shown by those who use the unnecessarily loud big bangs. The celebration of the festival of light also allows those with no claim to the religion to take advantage.

“Until the selling of fireworks is banned in this country and the law is enforced, our precious animals will continue to suffer every year,” said Tracey.
