Sunday, 15 July is National I love Horses Day

The tallest horse breed is the Shire, which towers at 17 hands.

With over 200 breeds, these spirited animals have always had a close bond with humans. Not just a means of transportation, horses have ploughed fields for us, fought alongside us in wars, helped moved cattle and were companions on long lonely trails.

The tallest horse breed is the Shire, which towers at 17 hands, way above the tiny Falabella, which grows to only eight hands and is the smallest breed of horse.

The quarter horse, named for its speed on a short track, is one of three fastest breeds of horses. Thoroughbreds follow quarter horses for longer distance but Arabians outlast both breeds for endurance on the longest races.

How to observe

Visit a local stable for a horseback ride, or better yet, if you have your own, take them out for a wonderful day of riding, and post your photos on social media using #NationalILoveHorsesDay.
