When he set off: Anti-crime activist hits the road for Amanzimtoti

Jan walked the some 260 kilometres in an effort to raise awareness about women and child abuse. He has grown sick and tired of the country’s justice system allowing criminals out on bail after they commit horrendous murders, rapes and other crimes.

Jan explained this walk was a ‘practise run’ for the challenge he will tackle later this year. His aim is to walk from Durban to Pretoria’s High Court to hand over a letter explaining the pain felt by citizens of the country due to the weakened justice system, and this needs to end.

“Murderers and rapists are being allowed out on bail after committing such crimes. Our justice system brings pain to the citizens of this country, and that’s all it brings pain to. I want the government to not allow these people back out into the world and onto our streets,” he said.

Jan’s walk was tiring and long, but worthwhile as he believes it is a great way to raise awareness. He ran low on supplies but made it safely to Doonside around noon on Friday, whereafter he looped back to Amanzimtoti police station.

Activist Jan Mabuyakhulu completed his walk from Matubatuba to Amanzimtoti on Friday, 28 September.
