Ambitious Annell to join arts academy in New York

Annell will study towards a four-year degree in music, acting and dance, starting in June at the school which is in Manhattan on the west side of Central Park.

An Amanzimtoti High School matriculant, from last year, has been accepted into the prestigious American Musical and Dramatic Arts Academy in New York.

Annell Moya applied online, but was advised her application would go better if she appeared in person. “I flew to New York on 24 March and spent the whole day going through the process,” she said.

“We were split into two groups – singing and acting. We had to take sheet music with us and sing, accompanied by professional musicians. It was a pretty daunting experience, because everyone there could sing. But they were very encouraging and by the end of the day it felt like I was surrounded by friends.

“My audition went really well. I was interviewed by a faculty member and my spirits were lifted when she said she could see me fitting in well at the school. But I didn’t want to get my hopes up, as there were a lot of talented people there.”

Annell said she got to explore New York a bit during her five-day stay. She had visited twice before, but she never pictured herself living there. “The place is crazy, but I love the vibe. I found the people surprisingly nice and very helpful.”

Annell returned to Toti and it was a nervous wait until she received the fantastic news that she had been accepted – on her birthday, which made it even more special. “First I screamed, which freaked my mother out and she came running to see what was wrong. Then I cried.”

“I always knew I wanted to sing from a young age. I fell in love with acting in grade 8 when I was cast in a play at Amanzimtoti High. I learnt a lot about myself with acting. The dance side I still need to learn a lot and I’m so excited to get started.”
