Mambas cycle spectacular routes at south coast fever series
The club meets most Thursday afternoons at 4pm and again on Sunday at 3pm at Hutchinson's Park.
The crispy winter morning air was soon forgotten when the riders brought the heat to the 2019 South Coast Fever Series #1 sardine mountain bike race.
45 kilometers of excellent cycling and although there’s not much elevation, it’s still considered a hard race. The picturesque routes took the competitors through magnificent coastal forests, banana and pecan nut plantations, across bridges, along farm roads and on rocky single track close to the river gorge. The ride was full of different types of track too – rock, sand, road, gravel, deep gutter-like tracks which one had to concentrate on. The view of Umtamvuna Gorge was simply breath taking, one had to slow down a little to take the view in. Just when you think it couldn’t get better, it did, with another breath taking view looking seawards and at the river mouth between the gorge and the open sea. Carl Freyer managed to come third in his age category, in a time of 2:43:07. The next Amanzimtoti Cycling Club member who came in for the 45km event was Clinton Evangelides in a time of 3:14:37, sixth in his age category. Neil Geustyn rode the 25km event in a time of 1:38:44 which placed him fifth in his age category. Another Mamba who competed in the 25km was Colin Mackay, in a time 1:52:11 which placed him first in the grand masters age category.
