Hats on for spring at 21 Club
Confirmation to attend or not must be received by the relevant committee members by Friday, 18 October
Although the weather did not exactly play the game, nobody would have guessed once inside the Lords and Legends conference room, that spring had not sprung.
Lovely flower-bedecked hats served as centre pieces on the tables and butterflies abounded. On the menu was spring chicken, of course, with colourful veg and a meringue, fruit and ice-cream dessert to follow.
The guest speaker, Karen Tocknell, achieved the unthinkable at 21 Club. She had the audience in silence, attentive and visibly moved for her entire presentation. Mother of three, Karen lost her husband when the yacht ‘Moquini’ went down in 2004. Shock waves rippled through the yachting fraternity, as so for many supporters who felt deeply for those on board and their loved ones.
Karen’s premonition that all would not be well and the anxious times before there was confirmation of the tragic sinking of the vessel had many close to tears. From a stay-at-home mom with three children, Karen had to take control of the finances and her late husband’s business. This is where Karen’s topic, new beginnings began. She described the isolation caused by friends who were afraid to look her in the eye and the challenges that followed. Karen spoke of the ‘winter’ when things were bleak. It was the time to be still and let life catch up. Roots developed and the purpose of life became real and gave direction. And after winter came spring and the new beginning, the holding on to happiness and getting up and going out to help others.
Karen’s continued interest in education, serving on the boards of Kearsney College and St Johns has surely been appreciated. Recently remarried, Karen is selling the business and home to join her husband, Andrew, in Cape Town. 21 Club wishes her every happiness. Her spring message will never be forgotten.
21 Club meet at 11.30am for 12am for their AGM at Lords and Legends conference room. The décor will be pink in honour of breast cancer awareness. Wear pink or at least a touch of pink. Members can look forward to music trivia presented by Greg McLeod, followed by some dancing for those so inclined. Confirmation to attend or not must be received by the relevant committee members by Friday, 18 October.
