What a week it was at Wentworth Bowling Club.

What a week it was at Wentworth Bowling Club.

Amidst the excitement and fervor that contributed to the build up to the World Cup rugby semi-final, some gripping games were contested on the greens.

The final of the Roley Taylor pairs competition developed into a humdinger battle as Brian Smith and Maree Sadie clashed with Brad Claassens and Jay Retief in a game that saw both sides have their turn taking and lead and peeling three times during the match. As the players took to the mat for the final end Brian and Maree were two shots up on their opposition but, after 12 bowls had been delivered, Brad and Jay were holding two shots to draw level and force an extra end. With his second to last bowl, Brian played the perfect draw shot through the bowls in the head to land alongside the jack for shot, giving him and Maree the game and the title of mixed pairs champions for 2019.

The semi-final of the Grace Hare mixed trips competition saw the trio of club novices, Llewellyn Scrooby, Vic MacCreanor and Ruth Petzer continue to weave their magic on the green and pave their way to the final when they took the game against Matthew, Belinda and Kearan Lassak. The trio will take on Godfrey Addinall, Trystan Lassak and Maree Sadie at 1.30pm on Friday, 1 November, in the hopes of maintaining their cataclysmic momentum and earning the right to have their names etched in gold on the club’s honours board.

Wednesday’s promotion and development bowls played on Wednesday afternoon, 23 October, proved to be a successful outing for Eileen du Plessis and Mike Hough who took the top spot for the day. The 60/40 board spoils were shared by Gary Lelong and Gerald Dennis.

Rapidly improving new bowler, Trudi Rautenbach teamed up with Johnny ‘Mooiman’ du Plessis for Thursday evening’s bowls to notch up a resounding win and take home the apple tarts baked and donated by Amelia and Wayne Booysen. This casual event is an attempt to attract new bowlers to the try their hand at the game and is an open invitation to anyone wishing to try their hand at lawn bowls. Play starts at 6pm.

After an early start in the Grand Rapid Spur Big Jim pairs on Sunday morning, 27 October, it was Spider Williams and Rob Armstrong who stamped their authority on the competition to take home the first prize ahead of the father and son team of Kevin and Brad Claassens. The club’s newest bowler, 14 year-old, MacKenzie Garland teamed up with her granddad, Simon, and leading with some remarkable drawing shots won the second session prize. The 60/40 board was won by Tatum Brown.

On the calendar this week, the any pairs competition is scheduled for Wednesday, 30 October at 9am and the Wentworth Breakfast Trips, also starting at 9is. Because of the morning bowls on Wednesday, there will not be organised promotion and development bowls, but bowls are welcome to arrange their own matches.

With South Africa waiting in anxious anticipation for 11am on Saturday, 2 November, when the Springbok’s take on England in their effort to bring home the Webb Ellis Cup, WBC invites the community to enjoy World Cup fun bowls at 8am and then to join in the spirit of the rugby by watching the final on the big screen.
