Tons of litter collected during clean up
The majority of items collected are in fact day to day household items as well as countless nappies, car parts, hundreds and hundreds of shoes and flip flops, toys, broken glass, needles, and sadly numerous dead animals including, chickens, goats, dogs and cats.
Volunteers collected more than two tons of waste during Clean Surf Project’s Beach Clean Up that took place at Umbogintwini Beach, Athlone Park, on Saturday, 16 November.
Due to the heavy rainfall experienced, an incredible amount of litter washed up at Umbogintwini Beach and Rivermouth.

The organisation’s Romy Wenzel commented on the state of the area and said, “It is really, really heartbreaking to see how much waste makes its way from informal settlements (due to a lack of service delivery), storm water drains and canals into our rivers, straight into the ocean, scattering our treasured coastline with tons and tons waste.”

The Clean Surf Project Team would like to thank each and every volunteer who assisted in the successful clean up operation.
“Working hand-in-hand with eThekwini Municipality, Beach Management and Beach Cleansing Staff that assisted with many helping hands as well as machinery to remove as much litter as possible. Big thumbs up to Social Waste Management that took care of removing one ton bags filled with plastic bottles and polystyrene as well as rubbish bags with the attempt to recycle as much waste as possible. preventing it all to be taken to the landfill site instead. All in all, great teamwork,” added Romy.
The organisation is planning another clean up on Saturday, 23 November, however the venue and time is still to be confirmed.
