Help Amanzimtoti Lions raise funds for Jona Vaughan Home

Cash and pledges will be taken on the day while deposits can be done immediately.

Covid-19 has had an inevitable effect on everyone’s lives and not least the residents of Jona Vaughan Home, located on the corner of Bernadotte and Bowen streets in Amanzimtoti. Initiated by the late Lion Bert Runmer, who had a son with cerebral palsy, in 1974, the home opened its doors to its first 15 residents in 1985. Because of the heavy administrative burden, the home was handed over to the Durban and Coastal Mental Health Hostels, from where it was rapidly expanded to cater for more than 80 residents

Times have, however, changed to the point where the home currently finds itself in dire financial constraints, due to insufficient government funding to sustain or maintain the existing much-needed staff compliment. “Having noted this and given the continued relationship that exists, the Amanzimtoti Lions Club has committed to fundraise towards assistance into its welfare account, which will be audited and open to insight from the public, thus eliminating the possibility of public funding evaporation,” said Amanzimtoti Lions president, Ken Toward. “But instead of shaking tins at intersections, ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge has agreed to be taken hostage and incarcerated on Saturday, 3 October at the Galleria Mall centre court from 9am.

The public is encouraged to donate or pledge towards either his release to continue his work in the community, or to keep him in chains until such time as the R20 000 mark is achieved! Let us support those who are unable to support themselves.
