Masses of firearms seized by police during September

During September, 739 firearms and 5 132 rounds of ammunition were seized by police in operations.

Operations conducted by police stations within various districts in the province last month have yielded fruitful results, with hundreds of firearms seized.

“The presence of illegal firearms in the hands of criminals has a negative impact on our communities. Innocent lives are being lost while serious and violent crimes are committed with theses illegal firearms. These operations are aimed at fighting crime in the province and will be ongoing,” said acting KZN provincial commissioner, Major General Thulani Gonya.

During September, 739 firearms and 5 132 rounds of ammunition were seized by police in operations. Among the firearms recovered were 603 pistols, 15 homemade firearms, five semi-automatic firearms, 80 rifles and 36 shotguns. Firearm components such as barrels, magazines, slides, silencers and other components were also seized.

“I am pleased with the number of illegal firearms recovered in September. The recovery is the testimony that the police in the province are committed in eliminating illegal firearms in the province. We once again wish to remind citizens that we are in the midst of a firearm amnesty, which provides for indemnity against prosecution for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. There will, however, be no indemnity for firearms used to commit crime such as murder, robbery, hijacking and so on.”
