Kingsway High School appoints new deputy principal

I can’t believe this was my 20th year at Kingsway.

Kingsway High School will start the 2021 school year with a new deputy principal. Carl van der Merwe has been acting since 1 February, but was officially appointed on Monday, 14 December.

The Kingsway old boy matriculated in 1982, studied at the University of KZN and then did his honours in geography at Unisa. He began his teaching career at Brettonwood High School in Durban in 1991, where he taught geography and English, before joining Kingsway in 2000 after receiving a promotion to post level two, as the head of department of social sciences. This included history, geography, tourism and visual arts.

“I can’t believe this was my 20th year at Kingsway – it feels like I started there yesterday. Teaching is changing – some new teachers are still passionate about teaching, but others are not. Students are choosing career paths for money nowadays.”

Carl was born in Durban, but as he grew up in Toti, attended Twini Primary. “I always wanted to teach and the late Mrs Burgess, a teacher at Twini, was a huge inspiration to me.” Opting to do his compulsory two-year military stint before studying, he did his four-week practical at Kingsway and six weeks at Grosvenor Boys. He is involved in cross-country at the school and has organised the annual inter-school meeting at Amanzimtoti Sports Centre for many years.

He is also the branch chairman of the National Association for Profession of Teachers. He has authored two books to date – Top Class geography 10 and 11. “I’ve enjoyed teaching geography. The best part about teaching is the children.”
