R4m worth of copper cables seized, four arrested

Upon further investigations, it was established that about 13 suspects were busy burning copper cables at a house.

More than four million Rand worth of copper cables were recovered and four suspects were arrested following a joint operation in Illovu on Wednesday, 24 March.  Committee member of CCPO, George Snodey noticed the thick, dark smoke emerging from the area and proceeded to investigate.

“I took a drive through the back roads in Illovu and saw about three men burning cables. I immediately realised something was off, so I left and contacted ET Rapid Response and Amanzimtoti Crime Prevention Unit. We went back and when we approached the scene on foot, some residents alerted the suspects.”

Upon further investigations, it was established that about 13 suspects were busy burning copper cables at a house.  Three suspects were initially arrested.  Umkomaas crime prevention then joined and a fourth suspect was arrested.

“It was established that the cables were stolen from the eThekweni Council Depot at Springfield Park. The suspects were detained at Amanzimtoti SAPS.   On a follow-up operation, the team were led to a house in Isipingo, where more cables, as well as other stolen property, were recovered. Well done to the alert member who then activated the team,” said ET Rapid Response South Coast managing member, Tony Lokker.

The joint operation included Amanzimtoti CCPO, ET Rapid Response, Amanzimtoti crime prevention, Umkomaas crime prevention and Umkomaas K9 unit.
