
An attempted murder suspect was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment almost a year after stabbing his girlfriend multiple times.
“It is alleged that on 16 July last year, at about 15:30, the victim was at her boyfriend’s residence in Illovo Township. She was sitting on the sofa when her boyfriend entered the room. He asked her whether she loves him and her response was yes. He had a spear in his hand with which he started assaulting her. She sustained multiple stab wounds and was taken to hospital for medical treatment,” said communications officer, Captain Charlene van der Spuy.
A case of attempted murder was opened at Amanzimtoti SAPS for further investigation. Detective Sergeant Lungisani Gumede of Amanzimtoti Detectives was assigned as the investigating officer. Accused, Sbongiseni Chiliza, 33, was arrested on 2 September last year and brought before the court. The accused was denied bail and remanded in custody while the investigation was finalised.
“Chiliza was brought before Umbumbulu Regional Court for trial which started on Monday, 24 May, where he was found guilty of attempted murder. He was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment of which five years were suspended on condition the accused is not convicted of the same crime during the period of suspension.”
The accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
