Toti’s 21 Club is up and running again

“I am aiming to try and host interesting and engaging speakers on a variety of different subjects, with a bit of entertainment thrown in," said the club's new president, Carolyn Borchard.

THE Amanzimtoti 21 Club is up and running again, with Carolyn Borchard as the club’s new president.

“I have taken over from Gwyn McCleod, not quite sure how, as between visas and in fact all aspects of travel, chairing a school governing body, travelling, seeing to a sixth-year veterinary student and Grade 6 learner, most of my days are crazy. But, here we are and I’m always up for a challenge,” said the club’s president, Carolyn Borchard.

Borchard also has a passion for travel writing, and blogs on her Facebook page ‘TravelbyC’.  She recently embarked on an adventure to Italy and Scandinavia.

The club was started in the mid-1960’s as a lunch club for businesswomen in the Amanzimtoti area. The founder felt that women also needed some sort of ‘networking / social’ club.

It was originally once a month, and for just 21 members. Membership has now increased to around 100. So the 21 Club of today is not just a lunch and social get-together, but also educational. “Any woman can join, but for obvious reasons there are more retired woman as we meet on a Wednesday midday,” said Borchard.

During the start of Covid-19, a couple of breakaway groups tried to meet once a month, but numbers dwindled.

“I also realise that today’s women are spoilt for choice in terms of groups they can join, and for many, time and finances also play a part in determining when they can take time out for themselves. We thus need to move with the times, be relevant and ensure that our get-togethers are enjoyable and ‘unmissable’.

There has also always been a notable element of ‘giving back to the community’ and I want to continue with a couple of charity drives this year. Our fees are R70 a year, with a joining fee of R35. No need for unnecessary ‘fees’ and nor do we need to make any money,” said Borchard.

On Thursday, April 28, they hosted an ‘Easter lunch’ where they welcomed Cathy Keegan from Edu-Paw as their speaker. “I am aiming to try and host interesting and engaging speakers on a variety of different subjects, with a bit of entertainment thrown in as often as possible.

We’ve all been through two dreadful years and need humor, upliftment and interesting adult education. The women all brought along dog food to donate,” said Borchard.

Their next meeting is on Wednesday, May 25, and it is a ‘market day’ where anyone can bring and sell their creations, baked goods, products they sell part time or similar.
