Thabisile Khuzwayo of the Zanok’phila Foundation, a nonprofit organisation that operates in Adams Mission and KwaMakhutha said the idea of working with the youth was conceived after she witnessed the effects of drug addiction on the young people.

“At the event, the girls were reminded of the the importance of education and being respectful. The organisation has programmes for both boys and girls but the picnic targets girls between the ages of nine and 18, keeping them occupied and providing mentorship,” said Thabisile.

She said the idea of working with the youth started a few years ago after she and her mother decided to offer shelter to young people who wanted to quit drugs.

Guest speakers included Bishop Thandeka Nene, and Nonhlanhla Nyathikazi of the African Purity Foundation. Queen Ntokozo KaMayisela, the wife of the current Zulu king sent a message that was read to the girls.
