Pipe burst to affect most of Amanzimtoti

The rupture of the main pipe has led to the closure of supply to all reservoirs in Amanzimtoti.

THE main supply valve that feeds all reservoirs between Amanzimtoti, Lower Illovo and Illovo Beach had to be closed following a burst on the main trunk supply pipe on October 17. The location of the burst is in Bhekulwandle near the Amanzimtoti Water Works depot.

Ward 97 councillor André Beetge said this will lead to water-supply outages in Amanzimtoti, Kingsburgh and Lower Illovo.

“Residents in high areas experienced first a pressure drop and then a stop in supply as a result of this. The plumbing team is on-site, and the pipe has been exposed using the TLB [tractor-loader-backhoe]. A list of needed materials has also been submitted to stores,” said Beetge.

He added that he requested eThekwini to treat the incident as a top priority so it does not affect the entire town.

“They are working against the backdrop of inclement weather. Once complete, it could take several hours to fill the reservoirs, depending on usage in the lower areas,” said Beetge.
