Former CCPO employees appear in court for fraud

The plot was uncovered when office petty cash inconsistencies came to light.

THE two former employees who are accused of defrauding the Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) appeared in the Amanzimtoti Magistrate’s Court on April 23.

Samantha Roux and Logan Naidoo are accused of stealing money meant for the CCPO by replacing the CCPO’s banking details on invoices to clients with their own. The two are facing 65 counts of fraud after internal investigations revealed that hundreds of thousands of rands had been misappropriated.

CCPO’s committee member Paul O’Neill said the alleged fraud first came to light in October 2022 after some inconsistencies were found with the office petty cash.

“As a non-profit organisation, we rely on this money to pay for cars, buy fuel, salaries, radios, uniforms and more. All we want is a conviction,” he said.

When Roux and Logan were called to a disciplinary hearing, O’Neill said they admitted to stealing the money, after which they both resigned. Standing side by side on the dock during their first appearance on April 23, the duo avoided gazes as the magistrate quickly postponed the case to May 14. They were released with a warning to be at the same court at 08:30 on May 14.
