What to expect at the Highland Gathering

Get your kilt on for the annual Highland Gathering that is taking place tomorrow, April 27. The sound of Scottish bagpipes will fill the air and visitors will flock to the Amanzimtoti sport grounds to enjoy a fun-filled day.

THE biggest gathering of pipe bands in the southern hemisphere – the Highland Gathering – takes place at Hutchison Park in Amanzimtoti tomorrow (April 27) from 09:00.

The Highland Gathering is not just an event; it is a tradition, a community gathering, and a day filled with excitement for the whole family. The annual fundraiser, hosted by the Amanzimtoti Lions Club, promises so much more than the previous years.

For the outdoor enthusiasts, a dedicated outdoor adventure section is included for the first time. Whether you prefer a walk on the wild side, perusing a wide range of braais, camping equipment, sports paraphernalia, hobby items, leatherwork or knives, make sure you head down for some additional fun.

If it has a motor, it will be at the event, as well. Cars, bakkies, boats, jet skis and bikes will entertain every petrolhead out there.

There will also be various stalls, including a craft market, food court, animal shows, competitions and giveaways as well as live entertainment, while the Mr & Miss Highland Gathering will give local models the chance to strut their stuff on the catwalk again.

The highlight of the day, however, is the mass bands performance, at about 17:00, where all the pipe bands unite to create a symphony of sound. Danré van der Spuy will accompany the bands by singing Amazing Grace.

The cost of entry to the Highland Gathering is R60 per person or R40 for scholars and pensioners. Children six and under enter free.

Once again, courtesy of Durban Tourism and Sapphire Coast Tourism, there will be a Ricksha Bus available to pick up/ drop off passengers, for free, at the main gate (across from the Civic Centre) between 09:00 and 15:00.
