Amanzimtoti athlete wins Tour Durban trail run

After conquering the aQuellé Tour Durban Ewoud Grobler of Amanzimtoti Athletic Club now sets his sights on the upcoming Durban International Marathon and the prestigious Comrades Marathon in June.

EWOUD Grobler, a member of the Amanzimtoti Athletic Club, received an overall first place in the inaugural aQuellé Tour Durban Trail 20km race on April 20.

The two biggest innovations for participants of the traditional Tour Durban cycling race was the new mountain-bike gravel race and trail runs.

Despite being categorised as a veteran at age 43, Grobler dominated the open male category, securing first place in both gender and category positions with a finishing time of 1:43:40.

“I didn’t really have a goal time in mind, I was just happy with the win. It was meant to have been an easy run, under strict coach’s orders. But, I messed that up a bit with my heart rate spiking a bit too much to his liking on the hills,” he said.

Despite encountering a marshalling error early in the race, which led most of the participants off course and extended the distance by about 2km, Grobler found the race hugely enjoyable and well signposted.

Now, he sets his sights on the upcoming Durban International Marathon and the prestigious Comrades Marathon in June, ready to tackle the challenges ahead.
