Kingsburgh Welfare hosts child protection workshop

The Kingsburgh Child and Family Welfare society plans to host more workshops to educate and empower teachers, children and parents in recognition of Child Protection Month observed in May.

IN light of May being Child Protection Month, the Kingsburgh Child and Family Welfare recently held a workshop with teachers from various local early childhood development centres.

Led by the welfare’s social worker, Sandra Govender, the informative programme aimed to equip teachers with essential skills and knowledge to protect children effectively, as well as help them integrate awareness into their classrooms.

“Recognising the influential role teachers play in children’s lives, emphasis was placed on using engaging methods to convey important safety information. Practical examples and play-based learning activities were highlighted as effective tools for educating children about their well-being,” she said.

The workshop also addressed the different forms of child abuse and neglect, categorising them into physical, emotional, sexual and neglect.

“Child protection programmes play a critical role in raising community awareness and empowering individuals to recognise and prevent abuse. We believe prevention is better than cure,” said Govender.

Throughout the month, the welfare plans to host more workshops to educate and empower teachers, children, parents and the community in order to create a safe and secure environment for children.
