Spirited competition and family fun at the Highland Gathering [Pictures]

The Highland Gathering offered many stalls to browse, a wide variety of activities, delicious food and loads of performances to entertain the large crowds that attended.

VISITORS to the Highland Gathering, on April 27, not only got to witness the awe-inspiring sight of pipe bands converging in Toti for a spirited competition but they also got to indulge in delicious food, fun activities, stalls and performances.

The annual fundraiser, hosted by the Amanzimtoti Lions Club, brought back some old favourites as well as exciting new additions.

Spectators at the main stage were treated to performances by Fusion Rhythmic Gymnastics, Penzance Jazz Band, Danré van der Spuy, Rhythmic Arts Academy, Danae Erian, Double Beat Drum Studio, Crocworld’s non-venomous reptile show, Dries Laas, the accordionist, a dog agility show, Toti Hillbillies Line Dancing and the crowning of Mr & Miss Highland Gathering.

The beer tents also came alive with electrifying band performances by the Sweetwater Rock Band, Hagar Blu, BloodBrother, Golden Super Hawks and Broken Advocate.

For the outdoor enthusiasts, a dedicated outdoor adventure section was included for the first time. There was camping, sports paraphernalia and hobby items, to name a few, a demonstration by the 1st Umbogintwini Scouts as well as new and classic cars for the petrolheads.

Sapphire Coast Tourism, in partnership with Durban Tourism, provided various fun activities that were enjoyed by visitors from all walks of life, from playing games, such as bean bag toss and archery; entering the draw for the grand prize; winning branded giveaways; enjoying lovely sounds by the marimba band; watching phenomenal dance performances by the Zulu dancers; catching a short ride with the Durban Rickshaw pullers and/or experiencing a sightseeing round trip with the Durban Ricksha Bus.

The community tourism organisation’s Romy Wenzel said, “It was a great day, with many smiles and happy faces. It showcased what the region, its products and Durban has to offer. The Highland Gathering offers a great boost to tourism and local business; in fact, it’s one of the annual key events in and around the region.”

The day ended with the much-anticipated performance of the mass bands which created a symphony of sound as pipers and drummers played in unison. They were joined by Danré van der Spuy who sang Amazing Grace.

Wenzel thanked the Lions Club for a successful, well-organised event and congratulated Belinda Strydom who won the Sapphire Coast Tourism competition.

She received a two-night stay at Marriott Hotel, Karridene Beach, two beach horse rides with Gary’s Horses, two shark-cage snorkel experiences with Aliwal Dive Centre, and two spa treatments at The Bali Grand Lodge and Spa.
