Surveillance boost at tourism nodes in Amanzimtoti

The project aims to install 24-hour monitored camera systems at beaches and pathways to closely monitor crime. Similar camera systems have also been installed along Beach Road and at Baggies Beach.

SAPPHIRE Coast Tourism has launched a camera project in line with the eThekwini Municipality’s Safer Cities campaign to enhance security at popular tourism nodes.

The role of Safer Cities is to plan and implement community safety initiatives through an inclusive, multidisciplinary, preventative approach.

Kim McCarthy of Sapphire Coast Tourism and the Toti Beach Neighbourhood Watch said this project was also part of their social responsibility and involved working with the Amanzimtoti Community Police Forum (CPF) through Dane de Klerk.

“The project aims to install 24-hour monitored camera systems at key tourism nodes, such as beaches and pathways. The goal is for this initiative to be between our tourism organisation, security companies and the community,” she said.

The most recent camera, a dome type with Wi-Fi, was installed at Baggies Beach and was sponsored by ET Rapid Response.

Sapphire Coast Tourism’s Romy Wenzel said, “This decision was prompted by numerous reports of by-law violations at the beach in December, which disrupted residents.”

The live footage will be monitored by the Warner Beach South Neighbourhood Watch, and authorised individuals can report incidents to authorities or review footage if crimes occur.

“The purpose is to maintain order and ensure beachgoers feel safe, addressing frequent tourist inquiries about safety,” said Wenzel.

Cameras have also been installed along Beach Road, with the next one planned for Illovo Beach. McCarthy said, “The cameras have significantly reduced crime, acting as a deterrent even if they do not eliminate it entirely.”
