Schools take part in AECI Mining’s programme
AECI Mining's Strength in Numbers programme provides schools with scientific calculators and offers training for learners and teachers.
ON September 4, Strelitzia Secondary School and KwaMakhutha High School joined AECI Mining’s ‘Strength in Numbers’ Programme, a ground-breaking initiative designed to equip learners with the tools and resources needed to excel in mathematics and related subjects.

According to the 2019 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), South Africa ranked third-lowest in mathematics at the primary school level among 64 countries, and second-lowest at the high school level out of 39 countries profiled. These statistics underscore the urgent need for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education improvements, a goal that AECI Mining, in partnership with social investment agency GrowZA, aims to address through this initiative.
Thinus Bierman, acting executive vice-president of AECI Mining, explained that the ‘Strength in Numbers’ Programme provides schools with scientific calculators and offers comprehensive training for both learners and teachers.
“Access to scientific calculators empowers learners to tackle complex concepts, leading to better academic performance. A University of Fort Hare study revealed significant improvements in mathematics outcomes when students had proper training and access to scientific calculators. These tools foster critical thinking, enhance problem-solving skills and help ensure that all learners are equipped to succeed,” said Bierman.
The study further highlighted that inadequate calculator usage could result in a loss of up to 15% of marks in mathematics exams, impacting performance in other STEM subjects like science and economics.
“Mathematics and science skills are crucial for South Africa’s sustainable development. Our goal is to invest in the future of STEM education in Africa by providing vital resources and training. This supports sustainable growth and helps build a workforce ready for the global economy.
