New Year’s Day brings spring tides and bluebottles

Lifesaving South Africa has issued a waring to all Beach goers about spring tides, blue bottles and sand blasting conditions

SPRING tides are coming into cycle by December 31 and will be running for a few days.

This is according to Dhaya Sewduth, president of Lifesaving South Africa, who advised beach goers to exercise caution when swimming in the sea. “With the new moon, the Spring Tides will kick in for the new year, and one can expect higher than usual high tides and lower than usual low tides. This could make for stronger than usual rip currents, especially for unsuspecting swimmers,” Sewduth said.

All Amanzimtoti swimming beaches open and ready for bathers

“The sea, especially since Christmas Day, has seen mostly onshore, bringing with it lots of bluebottles and sand blasting conditions. This was unpleasant for beach goers. With the wind changing to offshore by December 31, the sea conditions will make for more favourable conditions until New Year’s Day. However, Lifesaving South Africa calls on bathers to only swim where its voluntary lifesavers or municipal lifeguards are on duty, as the lifesavers will establish the safest swimming zones,” Sewduth concluded.
