Lovu mother’s anguish after son’s mystery death

None of the friends the boy went on the trip with, nor their families, attended the funeral.

A MOTHER from Lovu township is searching for answers after her 20-year-old son did not make it home and was found dead following an outing by young people to an out-of-town beach.

Zanele Nkomo said her son, Simikahle Ndumiso Dlamini, left with acquaintances for a prearranged outing to Tongaat Beach, where they were to have fun on March 27. She said when the others returned the next morning, her son was not among them.

“I asked his whereabouts and one of them told me he had met a high school friend from Wentworth and had left with him,” said Zanele.

The family thought Simikahle would return on Sunday afternoon, but he failed to do so, and his phone was off. She said she was given the name of a friend from Wentworth from high school that they claimed had left with her son.

“I traced that boy on Facebook, and I was able to get in touch with him. He admitted that he saw my son at that place but denied ever leaving with him. He said he came over to chat, but later went back to his friends,” she said.

In the afternoon of March 29, she said one of the boys who was part of the trip sent her a location where they had allegedly last seen Simikahle. Nkomo said they travelled to Tongaat the next day, and when they got to the location, a security guard said that a body had been found by a jogger the day before. A trip to the Phoenix State mortuary confirmed that it was her son. Nkomo said the body had no visible injuries. An inquest docket was opened for investigation pending the results of the postmortem.

Nkomo said all she wants is justice for her son and hopes that the postmortem results will provide some answers.

“It’s sad that he had to die this way and we all miss him. He had just returned to Lovu from Port Shepstone and had spent most of the day before he left preparing for the trip,” she said.

Simikahle was laid to rest on April 11, but Nkomo said none of the friends he went on the trip with nor their families, came to the funeral.
