Three-day water outage announced by eThekwini
After the repairs have been completed, it could take some time to raise the water levels at the affected reservoirs.
A PLANNED reduction in bulk water supply on the Southern Aqueduct is set to affect residents and businesses in certain areas from today (August 12) to August 14.

In a statement, eThekwini said the Water Operations Department will shut down the existing 1200mm pre-stressed concrete pipeline to allow contractors to carry out sectional repair work in preparation for the new Southern Aqueduct Pipeline Upgrade Project.
“The existing 1200mm steel pipeline will remain operational and will continue supplying water to the western, central and southern regions. The City will closely monitor reservoir storage levels throughout the shutdown. Depending on water demand and reservoir levels, reservoir outlets may be temporarily closed to preserve available storage and reduce recovery times once bulk supply is restored,” read the statement.

The reduction coincides with the appointment of Siyanda Mwelase as the director of the Water and Sanitation Directorate, with effect from August 1.
A civil engineer by profession who also holds an MBA, Mwelase takes up the post as the City begins implementing the national treasury’s Metro Trading Services Reform, a Cabinet-endorsed programme that ties infrastructure funding to measurable improvements in water, sanitation, electricity and solid waste services.
Affected areas:
Ensimbini 1 and 2 reservoirs:
• Draaihoek, Ensimbini, Mahlabathini, Mangamazini, Mkhazini and Ntabankulu.
Folweni 1 and 2 reservoirs:
• Dodoza, Folweni A, B and C, Golokodo and Isiphingo Esincane.
