The Southern Aqueduct was shut down on March 30 to allow contractors to carry out critical preparatory work for the project of replacing the old asbestos pipeline with a modern steel one. eThekwini said key sections are scheduled for commissioning from April, while construction continues on other sections.

“Once completed, the project will significantly strengthen water security, reduce system losses, and improve long-term supply reliability for communities in the southern and central regions,” said eThekwini in a statement.
