Food and funds run dry at Kingsburgh welfare
The welfare handed out their last food parcel in December, and they appeal to the community for their support.
THE Kingsburgh Child and Family Welfare are in the midst of the most financially challenging month for many families, and they appeal to the community for their support.
The welfare is a non-government, community-based organisation that renders social work and supportive services in the Kingsburgh and surrounding areas. Their focus is on family preservation and community upliftment.

They embark on numerous outreach programmes in the community and are appealing to individuals and companies to support them either financially or with donations.
The welfare’s social worker, Sandra Govender, said that with the hardships that come with January, such as lack of finances and the start of a new school year, they are inundated with families and individuals in need. She added that it is a ripple effect, and they are here to help alleviate the stress and help them cope.
“However, we rely on public funds. We need help to help others. In December, we handed out our last food parcel, and now our food cupboard is empty,” said Govender.
Items on their wish list include:
- Food: Tins and non-perishable items
- Toiletries
- Second-hand clothing for all ages and genders
- Household items
- Sponsorship toward projects
- Donations or support for their running costs
As a means of generating an income, the welfare also runs a charity shop. The shop is two-fold, as it helps the welfare raise funds for families and projects, while also creating an income for unemployed people who buy and resell the items.
They do not know what the year holds, but they are here and willing to serve the community with whatever they have, and receive.
