Help Wanderers Haven build a place of safety

Part of the proceeds from the market in the Toti CBD this weekend will go to the non-profit organisation – to start the building process.

HELP Wanderers Haven raise funds towards building a place of safety for those in need, by supporting the New Time Market in ‘The Square’ at the Toti CBD this weekend.

The local flea market will be held this evening, January 27 from 17:00 to 21:00 and on Saturday, January 28 from 09:00 to 15:00. Wanderers Haven, together with Mug and Dine, started the market initiative to uplift the CBD and raise funds towards a charitable cause, The Haven.

Part of the proceeds will go to the non-profit organisation, to start the building process. Their charity shop will be open, and they will be selling various items at their stall.

The Haven, a place of safety, will become the other part of Wanderers Haven. They will continue to assist those in need, except now they will be housing people. Now that the pre-existing house has been demolished, they can begin with the building process. The funds are needed for building plans, contractors, building materials and so forth.

Co-founder of the organisation Sharon Swanepoel said, “We first need to fence the area and build retaining walls, then we will build a church / community centre and a charity shop on the road front. Behind this, and gated, will be the Haven where we will have cabins for families, single dorms for women and men, and ablution blocks.”

She emphasised that it is not a shelter or a squatter camp for people from other areas. “We have a need right here in our own community where people cannot get by and just need a bit of help,” said Swanepoel.

Wanderers Haven is currently in need of volunteers and monetary support. “We have a woman who runs the shop for us, but she needs help sometimes. We have various outreach initiatives and provide help for our families with medicine, school clothes, books and Sassa and ID applications. We also pay rent for some of our families to get them back on their feet. We always need monetary support to help,” said Swanepoel.

Alternatively, monetary donations can be made at the following banking details: Wanderers Haven, First National Bank, Cheque account number: 62858409131.
