A WISH to alleviate poverty and create entrepreneurs in KwaMakhutha has driven Thoko Ntuli to start a large-scale gardening project that will involve young people in the area.

Ntuli said he came up with the idea after realising that some of the open space that is lying vacant at the Umuzi Training Centre can be made productive by using it to grow fresh produce.

“That will also give our youth something to do instead of sitting around and doing nothing. I want them to learn that they can also do the same thing in their own spaces at home and grow fresh produce to sell,” said Ntuli.

The vegetables that are grown will be sold to local shops and to schools that have feeding schemes. The rest will be sold to the community. Poultry farming will be added at a later stage. To expand the project, Ntuli is looking for donations of seeds of different vegetables, wheelbarrows, hoes, garden forks, spades, metal rakes, watering cans, a jojo tank, a water pump, sprinklers, jumpsuit overalls, safety boots, safety goggles, and work gloves.
