Dlamini (52) was an executive member of the African People’s Convention (APC). She and her 25-year-old daughter were found dead inside their home at dawn after police responded to reports of gunfire in the early hours of Monday morning.

Dlamini’s sister, Nonhlanhla, said the only other person in the house was Gugu’s baby. The child was unharmed, and no arrests have been made so far.

“At this point, we don’t know what happened because I was called to the scene after they were killed, and it was at dawn on Monday,” said Nonhlanhla. She could not speculate on the cause behind the murders.

Dlamini was an executive member of the APC and at the time of her death, she had started work in anticipation of the 2024 General Elections.

APC’s KwaZulu-Natal chairperson Celani Sithole said they have been deeply hurt by Dlamini’s passing.

“My deepest condolences to her family and friends for their loss. As we mourn this gruesome and senseless murder, we implore the police to work hard and bring those responsible to book,” said Sithole.

Ethel and Gugu were buried in EmaHlongwa on June 24.

Gugu Dlamini was shot and killed alongside her mother.
