De Jager’s deadly accident investigated

Werner de Jager is suspected to have been speeding at the time of impact.

THE police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after Werner de Jager, the widower of Amanzimtoti reverend, Liezel de Jager, was involved in an accident that left two women dead in the Free State three months ago.

The accident happened on April 15, on the N1 near Koppies, and the SUN was made aware of it last week after being contacted by Guy Eales, whose wife Linda (54) and mother Berniece (84) died. Eales said the family’s Toyota Fortuner was rear-ended by Werner’s Honda sedan, which was apparently travelling at a very high speed. Werner also suffered some injuries but was later released from hospital. According to Eales, Werner was unreachable after being discharged from the hospital.

“The details he provided turned out to be incorrect, and even the investigating officer could not get hold of him. When searching his name on the internet, I came across the articles published by the SUN about the death of his wife, and I thought the SUN might know how to get hold of him,” said Guy.

Werner had apparently given police the address of the Dan Pienaar Drive house where his wife died as his current residence. The house was owned by the NG Kerk Suidkus and has since been sold. Werner had not lived in the house since 2021. Eales confirmed that the investigators have since established where Werner currently stays.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lorraine Earle said no arrests have yet been made as the case is still under investigation.

“As soon as the investigation is completed, the docket will be taken to the director of public prosecutions for a decision,” said Earle.
