Tidy Towns transforms the town

The community-driven project's upcoming initiative is to revamp the iconic Warner Beach sign.

TIDY Towns Amanzimtoti has been making significant progress cleaning up the town and is now planning on revamping the iconic Warner Beach sign.

Tidy Towns, a community-driven project, has been cleaning up the verges and off-ramps, specifically targeting areas that are most visible to visitors. Coordinator Michelle Dunnett said, “We have cleaned out clogged stormwater-drain channels and removed weeds from the kerbs and pavements.”

Now that they have finished up on Seadoone Road, they have moved to the Warner Beach area near the sign. “Many years ago, beautiful paving was installed as the first phase of a proposed upgrade to the area. These pathways were so covered with weeds and grass that you couldn’t see they were there. With great effort and dedication, the Tidy Towns team has cleared the pathways,” she said.

Michelle said that while they were clearing the weeds in and around the iconic sign, they noticed the tiles had popped off and the foundation had cracked due to the roots of nearby trees pushing up the cement. “We asked the community for help, and we have received phenomenal support with many offers of assistance,” she said.

Some of the businesses and people who have come on board are Friendly DIY Hardware, Warner Beach Preparatory School, SBC Solution, Gary’s Horses and Anton Kieck.

Michelle added that the response from the public fuels their enthusiasm to keep going. “The community has enabled us to keep our two-man team busy every day. Our goal is to have enough financial support from the locals to have Tidy Towns teams in each area,” she said.
