Joint effort in empowering survivors of abuse

The joint effort promotes survivor empowerment and remains dedicated to the holistic care of children in need of protection.

uTHINGO Crisis Centre hosted an empowerment workshop for 25 vulnerable children and survivors of abuse at the gender-based violence desk at Amanzimtoti SAPS recently.

uThingo’s founder and trauma counsellor Mildred Ngcobo said their mission is to advocate for the rights and protection of victims of rape, sexual assault and domestic and gender-based violence. They promote survivor empowerment and are dedicated to the holistic care of children in need of protection.

The children, who were accompanied by their teachers, were reminded of basic situational safety tips and body safety and how to be aware of gender-based violence and human trafficking.

Sergeant Nondumiso Mncwabe (Amanzimtoti SAPS), Estelle van Eeden (Sparrow Trust) and Mildred Ngcobo (uThingo Crisis Centre) teach children about safety.

Amanzimtoti SAPS’ Sergeant Nondumiso Mncwabe said the event is also for children to get to know them better. “We want the children to know that police are here to help – we are their friends and we can keep them safe,” she said.

With the generosity of uThingo’s partners, they were also able to gift each child with a new tracksuit, as well as sweets and colouring-in books. Mildred thanked the Amanzimtoti Community Police Forum, the Amanzimtoti SAPS Social Crime Prevention team, Usizo-lomndeni.org, Jarefs Paints & DIY Centre, Sparrow Trust and the friends of uThingo for each donation that was made for a successful empowerment programme.
