WATCH: Amanzimtoti colour run raises funds for long walk

Steven Murray, a man who stands up and speaks out for those who can't, will be walking from Durban to Cape Town to spread awareness at schools.

STEVEN Murray (32) of Winklespruit will be undertaking a 1 721km walk over a 60-day period to spread awareness about mental health, autism and anti-bullying.

In an attempt to raise funds for ‘The Long Walk’, a 4km colour run was held at Hutchison Park on Saturday, September 2. The fun-filled morning was well-attended by his supporters and members of the community.

On the day, he also shared his story and the reason why he will be embarking on this journey.

Murray, who has racked up thousands of followers on TikTok for his motivational content, has made it his mission to stand up and speak out for those who cannot do it on their own.

He said, “There is a lack of understanding among our youth who are too afraid to speak out due to the negative stigma associated with mental health awareness. This needs to change. As someone who has first-hand experience with mental health challenges and bullying, this is something close to my heart. I also feel it’s important to embrace people’s differences, such as those who are on the autism spectrum.”

In an effort to spread awareness, Murray and his team will be embarking on a journey from Durban to Cape Point, starting on October 1. He will be sharing his experiences along the way to let the youth know that there is hope.

“I’ll be stopping at schools and educating our youth about their own mental health and the impact that poor mental health as well as bullying can have on others. Now, more than ever, we need to encourage them to seek help and be the help that others need,” he said.

Some of the things he needs for the walk include a team of two with recovery vehicles for safety and medical reasons, funds for fuel, food supplies and water, walking gear, sponsors of accommodation and assistance in spreading awareness through various platforms.
