Umgababa political violence victims remembered
Traditional leaders and family members of the victims were also in attendance.

ON October 30, the Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, and eThekwini Municipality attended a remembrance held for people who lost their lives in Umgababa during the 1990s political violence.
The annual Siyabakhumbula Day is held near uMgababa Resort at a memorial built for those who perished in the violence. Traditional leaders and family members of the victims were also in attendance. The event commenced with a wreath-laying ceremony. Delivering the keynote address, Minister Dlamini-Zuma honoured the fallen for their contribution to the history of South Africa.

“I encourage young people to study to contribute to the economy of this country. Youth should stay away from alcohol and drugs because it destroys their future. We all have a responsibility to protect women and children,” said Dlamini-Zuma.
eThekwini’s chairperson of Governance and Human Capital, Nkosenhle Madlala, reiterated the significance of commemorating the day while asking residents of Umgababa to bury the past and find a way to brighten the future and support each other.
