AfriForum repairs dug-up ground at Baggies Beach

It took eThekwini Municipality more than six weeks to repair a burst pipe at Baggies Beach.

AFTER a section of the ground was left dug up after a repair to a burst water pipe at Baggies Beach, AfriForum Amanzimtoti stepped in to get it fixed on February 17.

Jannie van Staden, chairperson of the Amanzimtoti branch, said a water pipe to the old showers at Baggies Beach had burst, causing a continuous flow of fresh water.

“According to community members and the Warnadoone Skiboat Club, the water was running for more than six weeks. Apparently, a lot of references were allocated to it before it was eventually repaired,” he said.

Although the repair was done, the ground was never fixed. “I discussed the work with Brandon Blignaut of the ski-boat club, and we decided to fix the hole ourselves. We were fair towards the municipality; we gave them a week to fix the problem. Apparently, a big fishing competition is coming up, and they don’t know when it will get fixed. The hole was at the entrance and exit spot for the boats,” said Van Staden.

He added that the organisation stays within the law and does not promote any unlawful action by the community.

“However, there is a time when we need to stand up and do the right thing. We cannot wait for a possible solution six weeks down the line anymore. That’s why we decided to take action,” he said.

In addition to addressing immediate concerns, AfriForum is actively involved in an Adopt-a-Beach project. This initiative aims to enhance Winklespruit Beach over the next decade, creating a safer and more enjoyable environment for all.
