According to PT Alarms’ spokesperson, Dhevan Govindasamy, it is alleged to have been dumped by municipal employees. “Heaps of sand and rubbish are obstructing the freeway,” he said.

Ward 97 councillor and eThekwini Municipality executive committee member, André Beetge, said a group of between 200 to 300 protestors, predominantly from the Durban Solid Waste department, have caused havoc outside the Durban City Hall. “Refuse bins have been thrown over, and litter strewn across the street,” he said.

Beetge added that they have moved to various other areas around Durban.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible to ease the traffic congestion.

Metro police are on the scene to assist with the flow of traffic.
