Municipal staff on wildcat strike disrupt Isipingo
Striking eThekwini municipal workers barricaded some roads in Isipingo.

METRO police with the assistance of security companies worked hard to disperse a crowd of striking eThekwini Municipality workers who were damaging public property and barricading the road with burning materials in Isipingo and Reunion earlier today (February 29).

The municipal workers are on a wildcat strike, and chief among their list of demands is that their payscales be similar to workers of metros in Gauteng. Municipal services, including waste collection, have been severely impacted. Their antics on Phila Ndwandwe Road disturbed the flow of traffic between Isipingo and Reunion, causing it to be rerouted to other roads.

In a statement, eThekwini Municipality said it obtained a court interdict against the striking workers.
“We are extremely concerned about the violence accompanied by intimidation and damage to property caused in the name of striking workers. The interdict against striking employees prohibits any unlawful conduct, acts of violence and interference with the city’s activities, services, and operations,” read the statement.
The municipality also said it has urged the police to adopt a ‘no-nonsense’ approach to those who abuse the right to engage in unlawful behaviour and violate the rights of non-striking workers.
