Retired teachers reunite at the Amanzimtoti Civic Centre

The Retired Educators’ Voice non-profit organisation was formed to unite and support retired teachers.

RETIRED teachers from across the province met for the official launch of the Retired Educators’ Voice (REV) at the Amanzimtoti Civic Centre, recently.

The REV is a non-profit organisation that consists of teachers, both school and office-based, who have retired from the Department of Education.

Its mission is to unite as well as provide support and care to one another so they can remain lifelong learners and retain their professional integrity. It also aims to cater for learners from poverty-stricken homes.

REV secretary Bongiwe Mbatha said the organisation was formed after realising that the department lost interest in retired teachers. “REV was established to revive and take care of them. We currently have more than 300 members from 12 district schools and offices in KwaZulu-Natal,” she said.

The day included dancers, poetry, a message of support, traditional dances, a guest speaker and presentations of gifts as well as refreshments throughout the day.

Mbatha said the day went as smoothly as planned. “We had the support of retired teachers and non-teachers, including companies in terms of donations. The attendance was 280, which was beyond our expectations. New members continue to join, and we are open to more,” she said.
