Tidy Towns unveils selfie wave wall at Winkle Beach

Several people and organisations played a part in creating the selfie wave wall which is a significant step towards Tidy Towns' goal of achieving blue flag status for its beaches

TIDY Towns Amanzimtoti has proudly unveiled its latest attraction to Winkle Beach – the selfie wave wall, which promises entertainment for beachgoers even when swimming is not permitted.

The exciting addition, made possible with the help of many other collaborators, marks a significant step towards Tidy Towns’ goal of achieving blue flag status for its beaches.

Michelle Dunnett, coordinator of the community-driven project, said, “Although we’ve been severely challenged with our sewage issues, the plan was to fix and beautify what we could with the idea that once the beaches were opened, our tourists and locals would be super impressed and they would spread the word to the world. We are halfway through the project. There have been many brilliant individuals who have contributed along the way,” she said.

As part of the upliftment initiative, a carguard, Noah Mvuselelo Zwane, has become a dedicated caretaker for the beach area.

“Every time there has been a clean-up, he’s always been happy to help. It was then decided to have a permanent person to maintain the area. Now receiving daily pay, he can afford transportation to reunite with his family,” said Michelle, adding that this initiative not only supports those genuinely struggling but also fosters a sense of empowerment within the community.

The Winkle residents also contribute to Noah’s efforts by tipping him – acknowledging his hard work and dedication. Looking ahead, Michelle said there are plans to expand the project, and she encourages more businesses and community members to make a financial contribution or find out how they can assist.

She thanked the following people and organisations who played a part in the selfie wave wall: AfriForum Amanzimtoti for contributing the primer, Neville Hazell for the expert plastering skills, Seabreeze Hardware whose paint donation splashed colour onto the canvas, Anton Kieck of The Lens of AntonK for his inspirational talent, Frankie Oberholzer for his surfboard donation and Christine Andrews for her breathtaking artwork, sponsored by Sapphire Coast Tourism.
