Lieutenant Colonel David Malcom Ragavan was known as a great leader with high discipline and confidence.

ISIPINGO Police have expressed shock and sorrow at the untimely passing of a great, gentle giant, Lieutenant Colonel David Malcom Ragavan (56), who died on March 28 after a short illness.

Ragavan, who was serving as Isipingo Police Station’s commander of support, was known by his colleagues and commanders as a great leader with high discipline and confidence, which he always strived to instil in others.

The station’s communications officer, Constable Donald Naidoo, said his colleagues at the station and in the eThekwini District always praised him for going beyond the call of duty, as a leader and as a father figure. “He will be fondly remembered for his famous line, ‘I will make a plan’, a slogan he preached and lived as he served and protected each community he was placed in,” he said.

Assuming duty as a police constable in 1988, Ragavan worked hard, always exceeding expectation, earning promotion after promotion during his years of service. He worked in various components of the police, climbing the ladder until his appointment in 2021 as commander of support.

Naidoo said he received several awards, and his prized accolade was a certificate of good service signed by former president Nelson Mandela. “He had several medals bestowed on him over the years in recognition and appreciation of his service in the police and excellent performance,” he said, adding that he was a man of quality, knowledge and endurance, who will be missed.

Station Commander Colonel Hensford Msawenkosi Zama extended condolences to his family and everyone who worked closely with him. “One of his many trademarks was how meticulous he was in everything he did,” he added.

Isipingo Community Police Forum’s Junaid Iqbal thanked Ragavan for his contribution to the CPF and community, as well as for always advising members on how to do their duties and coaching them to always do the right thing.

A memorial service will be held for him at House of David in Isipingo Hills on April 24.
