Jay Ramdeo successfully completed the ultra-marathon and is now preparing for the Comrades Marathon.

EIGHTEEN members of Amanzimtoti Athletic Club (AAC) took on the Two Oceans Marathon on April 13 and 14, with Jay Ramdeo taking on the ultra-marathon for the first time.

This year, the event celebrated its 25th half-marathon (April 14), while the ultra-marathon (April 13) is in its 53rd running. The Western Cape-based marathon takes athletes on a spectacular course around the Cape Peninsula.

Ramdeo, who ran in the 50 to 59 age category, completed the 56km in a time of 06:03:36. “I had an amazing experience during the race, the highlight being Chapman’s Peak, and the support from everyone on the road was also amazing,” he said.

In preparation for the race, he said he trained extensively. “I did a six-week block training leading up to the race with sprints, hill repeats and tempo runs. I also participated in long runs with the Amanzimtoti Training Club. I did strength training at least three times a week and at least one marathon before the event,” he said.

Ramdeo is currently preparing for the ultimate human race, the Comrades Marathon.

AAC’s Liesl Fourie congratulated all the athletes who braved the ultra- and half-marathons and finished with good times.
