MEC of the Department of Education (DoE) in KwaZulu-Natal, Mbali Frazer, opened Illovo Township’s newest school recently during a ceremony that included the community and bigwigs from her department.

Ullovu Secondary School consists of 25 standard classrooms, three multipurpose classrooms, a media centre, a computer room, an administration block composed of seven offices and two sick rooms, a laboratory, six storerooms, a strong room, a kitchen, a guardhouse and a sports field.

DoE spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said Ullovu Secondary School is a smart school with its own Wi-Fi network, with uncapped internet access for the next three years.

In her remarks, MEC Frazer said it is because of a belief in the power of education that her department ensures that free quality education is a basic human right.

“We also invest billions to improve the quality of education and the infrastructure of our schools,” said Frazer.

For the school’s first class of matriculants this year, Frazer said she expects nothing but a 100% pass rate with all the resources and technology the learners have.

The building cost of the school was R45.36 million, and its construction phase saw several jobs created for the surrounding community.
